Explore what we offer
At Radical Empathy Counseling, Jay is able to offer individual therapy, utilizing some of the most evidence-based treatments that allow them to dive deeper into healing trauma. If you aren’t seeking trauma work, they have also worked with folks who struggle with depression, anxiety, substance use, and who navigate the world as marginalized human beings. There are no rules or identities you must have to see Jay, they are privileged to see you, just as you are.
Individual Counseling
Jay provides individual sessions that are slightly under 60 minutes. If you want to adjust your drinking or substance use patterns - what Jay believes are coping skills, or explore the challenges that you face today and most every day, especially if you are a marginalized person. LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC folks are often challenged with both past and ongoing trauma, which can be so taxing and challenging to try to exist and survive in. In the words of Audre Lorde, “ There is no such thing as a single-issue struggle, because we do not live single-issue lives”. As marginalized people, trauma is more complicated and complex because of this, which Jay addresses. If you are someone who needs help coping with every day stressors and the depression and anxiety that can come with it, Jay is honored to be a safe space to encourage growth and healing. Jay is happy to explore and help you work with whatever you are faced with, work with you, collaborating what kind of treatment you want and need at this place in your life. You are encouraged to be a part of your treatment, not just following instructions. The relationship created in the therapeutic process can be incredibly impactful and helpful as we explore your needs. It is truly the relationship that we create that is the precipice to the work that unfolds.
EMDR Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a trauma focused modality that decreases traumatic memories and symptoms much faster than talk therapy. EMDR utilizes eye movements to encourage the brain to process trauma faster than it typically does. Often times, EMDR is compared to REM sleep, if you’ve ever seen someone's eyes flutter while they are in these deep sleep state. EMDR is similar in the sense of using eye movements to quicken the processing time that can typically affect both the brain and body with survived trauma. With a trained therapist, using bilateral stimulation, the brain can be trained to process any trauma that is “stuck” and allow reintegration at a much faster rate than talk therapy. It is important that safety is established before we utilize this modality. Jay values a “bottom-up approach” when addressing trauma, emphasizing safety and using these more complex treatments, knowing trauma is insidious as it affects our thoughts and feelings. That being said, Jay is an EMDR Therapist, which allows them to use this modality, if the client agrees. Jay will walk you through each step of the way if it is decided that EMDR is a good option for you. As always, you are invited and encouraged to be involved in your therapy.
Brainspotting Therapy
Jay is also a Brainspotting Therapist, meaning they have completed Phases 1 and 2 of Brainspotting (BSP) training. Most clients have heard of EMDR for treating trauma, which is also effective and highly evidence-based. Similar to EMDR, BSP utilizes the eyes and the ways in which they gaze in order to find what is called a “brain spot”. Once the client and Jay have identified a brain spot, then the client focuses on this gaze, recalling memories, body sensations, or current triggers. We call this “brain-based” therapy, trusting the brain will go where it needs to go in order to heal. Jay will ask about the intensity of activation and sensations as they guide clients to look at various spots of the room. When clients can identify a spot that feels more activated, Jay encourages them to follow wherever their brain may go. These sessions are often silent, as Jay focuses on the client and their process, occasionally “checking-in” if they notice a bodily shift, inquire what they may be experiencing in that moment, and reminding the client they are not alone. Similar to EMDR, establishing felt client safety is a necessity before using these types of therapies. The goal is not to re-traumatize you, as the client. Safety is our first priority always.
